Hello there

Hot weather is with us, and February is often the hottest month of the year in Australia. You must prepare for it.

Heat drags water from the body. This is often via sweat. When this evaporates, it pulls heat from the system, and is natures automatic air conditioning system. Body temp must not rise else fever and illness are inevitable.

Fluid must be replaced regularly. Drink 1.5 to 2.0 L of water a day. That is roughy 6-8 glasses. Ideally water at room temperature is best, and much better than chilled water which can cause cramps.

It is better than coloured chemicalised fizz drinks and cola products. These are usually high in kJs (suigar), provide no nourishment, even though caffeine (as in tea and coffee) gives the brain a kick. Have a jug of water on the sink or desk, fill a glass so one is constantly ready for use. Use often, even though you will urinate more often.

If walking, go in the cool of the day, and take a plastic 250 mL bottle of water with you and drink frequently as walking generates heat and sweat. So does any form of physical activity. Wear a hat when outdoors (better than a cap, only partially protective of the skin).

Wear light weight gear, cotton is best, specially under gear. Sweating in the crutch often causes infections, specialy monilia in women. Cotton can breathe, nylon cannot.

Open windows in the hope of a breeze. Air conditioning is fine, but fresh air is best.

Eat lots of salad veggies, go easy on high fat high kJ products, sugar and sweets
