I love the start of each new year.  By now you’ve probably settled down from the Christmas gourmandising, and the smashing noise of Midnight Dec 31 (I thought the Harbour Bridge melted, but it hadn’t)  By now you’ve made a rash heap of “New Year Resolutions”, and probably broken at lease 90%. Right?

There is another side to New Year, and it’s been my favourite hobby horse for decades.  Sit and meditate during the month.  Thoughtfully  apply to paper the key issues you really hope to achieve in 2008.  It may take a few minutes. I prefer to take a month, with the final sheet of paper being produced, read and signed by Jan 31.

GOALS FOR 2008

I call it “Goals For 2008”  Whatever our age, be it primary schooler, teenager, mid life to older age, there is always a heap of :”things” that one desires.  I like to apply these in summary to paper, 1, 2, 3, 4, etc.  Usually it fills an A4 page.  Beside each entry, write a time frame – that means the date by which you hope to have achieved that goal.

The range is limited only by your imagination, genuine desire for something, and other  aspirations.  It can include making new friends, taking a vacation, finding some new ways of making more money, house, car, mending fractured relationships.  I like to include a health component, such as “Keep my weight at 68 kg, and 93 cm around my middle), cholesterol at 4.0, blood sugar 5 (non diabetic), take a 30 minute walk each day, avoid junk food, get blood pressure down to 135/80.”

AVOID FUTURE NASTIES

Sure, some will need medical intervention, but taking precautions now will help avoid nasties down the track. It will help assure  better health and longevity whatever your present age.  At the end of this, write  “I guarantee to make every effort to achieve these goals by Dec 31 2008”  Then sign and date.  Read this every night at bedtime.

You know, over time, 95% of these “goals will take place.  It may take longer than a year, but ones not achieved go onto the 2009 list. I have proved it for over 40 years, and still read my file daily.
