Hello,
Winter is now well and truly here. Last
month I gave
a few tips
on how to avoid the flu, coughs and colds. However, if
you succumb, here are ten tips
on how to
fox yourself.
Again, they are all simple, yet mostly work.
DR WRIGHTS
TEN POINT
PLAN TO TREAT THE FLU
|
1. If feeling really ill, feverish chills achey coughing
and sweating, go to bed for a day or two, and avoid work until
OK (Otherwise you spread the virus to others)
2. Gargle the throat with warm salty water (half tsp salt
to glass warm water) 3 hourly. Expel after each mouthful.
Do not swallow.
3. Drink lots of water 1500 – 2000 mL or even more
if perspiring is essential.
4. Have lots of hot lemon drinks (one tsp honey per glass)
5. Paracetamol 500 mg 1-3 times a day reduces fevers and
aches. (Elixir for children – see label)
6. Go quietly on food. You will not starve to death. Light
non fatty ones are best. Fruit and juices are good.
7. Have a quick daily shower, ending with cool and dab body
dry with a very soft towel.
8. Keep warm, avoid drafts and fresh chills. Keep indoors
till OK.
9. Try lemon and honey elixir for coughs. Pholcodine mixtures
give marginal help, but most cough mixtures are of little
value.
10. Steam inhalations (keep away from kids) or Narium mist
nasal spray will clear the nasal passageways. Antibiotics
are usually unnecessary in simple uncomplicated bouts of colds
and flu. See the doctor if symptoms persist or worsen.
That is the list. If you would care to inspect Vimiera Village,
which provides everything that an older person needs, phone
02 9868 7544. There are Independent Living Units and now the
Assisted Apartments, where meals, cleaning and laundry are
provided. You or your parents will love it.
Every good wish,
