Autumn is now heading into winter, and it's time for the Annual Jab

That means protection from deadly forms of the Flu Bug, already circling nearby. They visit us from the northern climes, and are ready to pounce. Although simple coughs, colds, wheezes and sneezes are part of the winter scene, some viral strains can be deadly serious. Apart from the misery they cause, they can lead to pneumonia and even death. A significant number of Australians (2,500 estimated for this year ) may die from influenza and pneumonia each year, so be warned.

See your GP this month for the Fluvax stab. Even if you're healthy and young, it is well worth while. Those at special risk include anyone over 65, people with chronic disorders such as diabetes heart or kidney disease, anyone in a nursing home or hostel. Also, any one dealing with large numbers of people. Healthcare workers, those in the media, transport, serving in shops are starters. The flu bug is transmitted human to human by droplet infection, specially following coughs and sneezes.

On single Fluvax given in autumn gives good protection. It contains specific immunity against the “would be” trouble makers considered most dangerous this year. They are strains of the Influenza A and B virus, called A New Caledonia/20/99, A Wisconsin/67/2005 and B Malaysia/2004 .

There is no way the vaccine can cause the flu (as some believe), although discomfort and swelling at the injection site and a mild fever for 12-24 hours are common. Drink plenty of water and take a couple of paracetamol if this occurs. It soon settles. Protection for the next twelve months is considered high.

However, it does not protect against every cold/flu virus, as there are thousands of them Keep warm, keep dry, keep out of drafts, eat sensibly, do not smoke, go easy on the slops and aim for 8 hours sleep a night. This all adds to the body's natural immunity.
